Physical and Mechanical Properties of Sheepskin Pickled by Recycled Curing Salt

Curing is the first process of skin treatment mainly using sodium chloride salt to prevent its decay. At soaking step tannery, effluents will be discharged environment, which contains ion, negatively affect our environment. Therefore, it should either treated or reused so that can help reduce amount ion effluent environment and cost pickling. This study focused on recycling curing for sheepskin pickling studying effect pickled skin’s properties. Salt was recycled from cured skins manually, purified through dilution, filtration, treatment, drying. Five enzymatic bated sheepskins were collected Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. The recipes developed based weight pelt going with 0.8% H2SO4, 0.5% formic acid, 80% H2O each trial at different concentrations (8%, 8.5%, 6.5%, 7%, 7.5%) S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, respectively. Bromocresol green pH indicator. Then, properties samples measured evaluated in line ISO standards, recipe checked. results showed S1 mentioned materials 8% has highest tensile strength (80.3 N/mm2). In addition, also maximum tear 60 N/mm2 minimum 45.69 N/mm2. On contrary, S3 shown least values elongations as well strength. shrinkage temprature 107°C value 89°C lower compared standard temperature, 95°C. found within overall result this promising.
